Maryhill V Port Glasgow
1 -1

3rd April 2010

Maryhill earned another point in their fight against relegation after a keenly contested match at Lochburn Park.

The visitors started at a blistering pace and could have been three ahead after only five minutes, as Kevin Montgomery made excellent saves from Scott Nugent (twice) and Kevin Struthers. Maryhill, taking heart from this, gradually began to assert themselves, and went ahead in the 17th minute. Leyton Slack cut in from the right and his cross was met by new signing Kevin Howe, who headed past Sean Graham in the Port goal. Howe came close to scoring again, but just failed to connect on a couple of occasions. Hill were the better team at this stage as Port Glasgow's early threat faded. Keeper Graham just beat Ryan Scobie to a through ball, and  headed clear outside the penalty area. Mark Maxwell then lobbed past with the keeper stranded, and a Leyton Slack free kick skidded past the post as Maryhill finished the first half well on top.

Half Time  -  Maryhill  1   Port Glasgow  0

Maryhill continued to dominate in the second period, and two efforts from Ryan Scobie were well saved by Graham. The Port keeper also made a good stop from a Kevin Howe header. Against the run of play, the visitors grabbed an equaliser in spectacular fashion midway through the half. There seemed to be little danger as they were awarded a free kick some 40 yards from goal, but Paul Coyle's strike appeared to swerve at the last minute, evading the desperate attempts by Kevin Montgomery to keep the ball from crossing the line. The jury is still out as to whether it was a superbly placed shot or a freak goal. In any case, it spurred on  the visitors to look for a winner and set up an enthralling final twenty minutes. Two minutes from time a Craig Ferguson header beat Graham , but was cleared off the line by Paul Stanton. Kevin Montgomery, despite having had little to do, made a vital stop in the last minute after sub Jonathan Donnelly had set up Joe Beckley. Despite some close calls at both ends in injury time, neither side was able to score again, and had to settle for a point each.
