Maryhill
exited the last last cup of the season
with their heads held high after a
creditable performance which saw them
match their top division opponents for
long spells of the game. The Hill were
quickest off the blocks at the start of
the tie, forcing a series of corners and
with no takers for a fine Scobie cutback
in the seventh minute. Banks sent a good
effort just too high from the edge of
the area while Calder got down well to
stop a shot at the other end just a
minute later. The Peasy were playing on
the break early on, and it took a fine
last-ditch Mcgoldrick tackle to prevent
a goalscoring opportunity. Gradually as
the half wore on, the higher league club
began to assert their dominance, and
Chris Calder was forced into several
fine saves to keep the game scoreless.
He was however helpless to prevent the
opener just after the half-hour when a
michael Keenan shot cannoned off the
unfortunate Ross Barr, taking a huge
deflection and spinning into the net.
The Hill fought back, with Banks coming
close after some fine team play at the
edge of the Peasy box.
HT 0-1
The second half was end-to-end for long
spells, with both teams giving as good
as they got. The Hill equalised not long
after the hour mark when Craig Ferguson
laid the ball off to Ryan Scobie and
continued his run. The striker sent a
curling shot in which may or may not
have taken a dink off Fergie on the way
in, however the intent to score was
certainly there, so we're awarding it to
top scorer Scobie! As the game
progressed it looked certain to be
heading for penalties, but with eight
minutes to go, sub McBride scored the
winner with a left-footed drive. All in
all, a satisfactory performance despite
the defeat - it was also good to see the
two famous old North Glasgow foes
rekindle their rivalry in competitive
action after too long apart.
