Glasgow Perthshire V Maryhill
1 - 2
4th August 2010

Maryhill made a good start to the new season with a well deserved victory, after losing an early goal.

The game, and the season, was only 50 seconds old when Maryhill fans were fearing the worst. Indecision in defence allowed Shire's Matthew  Bennett to run on to a long ball and fire a well placed shot beyond Maryhill's trialist keeper. Ten minutes later the keeper made a good double block from shots by John Paul Craig, but the referee had already indicated that the Perthshire striker was in an offside position. The home team faded and posed little threat for the remainder of the first half as Maryhill controlled the game. Mark Maxwell's probing runs were posing a constant threat , with Craig Ferguson orchestrating many of the moves, and Ryan Scobie looking sharp up front. It was Scobie who scored a merited equaliser for Maryhill in the 18th minute when he met a Paul Callender cross, turned and fired  a low shot into the net giving Shire keeper Brian Thomson little chance. Alan Russell just failed to connect with a Scobie cross, then Scobie himself had a strong shot on the turn well saved by Thomson. Maryhill were well on top until the break, but found the home defence difficult to break down.

Half  Time  -  Perthshire 1  Maryhill  1

Maryhill continued to dominate in the second half, but as was the case last season, finishing off some good moves was the problem. Home defender Grant Irvine almost scored an own goal when he sliced a Mark Maxwell cross just inches past the post.Scott Banks had a powerful run end with a shot that was just wide of the target, then Craig Ferguson's well placed free kick whistled inches past. It was not all one way traffic however, and all the good work was almost undone when another moment of defensive dithering  allowed Craig to run clear, but fortunately for Hill the trialist keeper blocked the Shire striker's shot. Maryhill eventually made the breakthrough fifteen minutes from the end when Eddie Lambert headed home a  Maxwell cross for what proved to be the winner. There were further opportunities to increase the lead, but Thomson saved well from a long range Ferguson shot, then sub Michael Tolland's 25 yard effort beat the keeper, but just skimmed the crossbar. Perthshire sub Joe Haggarty managed to earn himself a yellow card despite not being on the field of play, for passing an unwanted comment on the referee's performance.

Overall a good performance by Maryhill, showing considerable improvement on last year's efforts. John Cunningham and Sinclair Soutar were solid at the back, Mark Maxwell and Ryan Scobie both impressed, and newcomers Andy Banks, Paul Callender and Eddie Lambert all turned in decent performances. It was Craig Ferguson, however, whose skill and composure caught the eye , and he could prove once again to one of Maryhill's most valuable assets.
