Maryhill V
Royal Albert
0 - 2
4th September 2010
0 - 2
4th September 2010
Maryhill stumbled to
their third successive
league defeat in a game
they should have had
comfortably sewn up by
half time.
The first half saw a
much improved
performance from
Maryhill, as they
totally dominated
against a very
ineffectual looking
Royal Albert team.
Almost the entire 45
minutes were played in
the visitors' half, and
John Cunningham came
close to opening the
scoring on two
occasions. In the 14th
minute his powerful
header brought out a
good save from Albert
keeper Craig Smith, and
a minute later another
headed effort beat the
keeper but was cleared
off the line. Hill kept
up the pressure, and a
30 yard shot from Craig
Ferguson looked net
bound, but was deflected
off a defender for a
corner. Newcomer Curtis
Rose wasted a couple of
good chances, then Ryan
Scobie cut in from the
left and fired a shot
just wide of the post.
It was all one way
traffic with the
visitors creating their
first chance ten minutes
from the break when
David Dickson's shot
from 15 yards went past
the post. Maryhill
remained well on top
until half time, but
just couldn't find the
net. The closest they
came was when Ryan
Scobie beat two Albert
players, but his shot
rebounded from the post
with Smith well beaten.
Half Time - Maryhill 0
Royal Albert 0
The visitors, probably
relieved to still be on
level terms, started the
second half in a more
positive manner, and
took the lead after only
three minutes. Slackness
in the Maryhill defence
allowed James McGill the
opportunity to blast a
shot high into the net
giving Robert Tiropoulos
in the Maryhill goal
little chance.
Maryhill's play
deteriorated rapidly,
and they seemed to
accept that they were
not going to take
anything from the game.
Three substitutions made
little impact as the
visitors, taking
encouragement from their
unlikely lead, grew
almost visibly in
confidence. A 35 yard
free kick from Jamie
Nesbit screamed inches
past the post, as the
Hill defence reverted to
the shambles of previous
weeks. The final blow
came in the 65th
minute. Poor defending
allowed Michael Neill to
run through on goal, but
Robert Tiropoulos
brought him down as he
was on the point of
shooting. As Neill was
probably not heading
directly for goal at
this point, referee
David McKniff's decision
to show the Maryhill
goalkeeper only a yellow
card was probably
correct. The lively, but
over theatrical McGill,
scored from the penalty
spot for his own and his
side's second, and there
was no way back for
Maryhill. The visitors
defended in depth to
comfortably thwart Maryhill's
feeble and disjointed
attempts to score, and
in the end Royal Albert
emerged as deserved
winners.
