Maryhill V Clydebank
1 - 3
7th August 2010

One of the fascinating things about following Junior Football is the way that the status and fortunes of clubs can fluctuate so quickly.
Four or five years ago anything other than a comfortable victory for Maryhill would have been a major shock in this fixture. Nowadays  the exact opposite is the case, with the Bankies, two leagues above the Hill, always strong favourites to come out on top.

With Maryhill lining up in a 3 - 5 - 2 formation, and defending very deep, it was little surprise that the majority of the play took place in the home side's half of the field. Despite this, Hill keeper Robert Tiropoulos was rarely troubled in the first half. After five minutes he easily dealt with a Ross McPherson effort, and a couple of tries from the always dangerous Steven Dymock posed the only real threat to the Maryhill goal. Despite Clydebank's territorial dominance, it was Maryhill who created the better goalscoring opportunities. A speculative Alan Russell overhead kick flew over the bar, then after the visitors' keeper Stefan Gonet had blocked a Craig Ferguson shot, Paul Callender had a great chance to score, but his shot was delayed long enough to allow Gonet to recover and push his effort away. Eight minutes from the break the closest we got to a goal was when Alan Russell was sent clear down the left wing, but his shot came back off the post with Gonet beaten. Overall, a draw was probably a fair reflection of the first half play.

Half  Time  -  Maryhill  0   Clydebank  0

Clydebank stepped up the pace in the second half, and largely dominated the game. A well placed McPherson free kick forced Tiropulos into his first save of the match, and the constant pressure finally paid off when they took a deserved lead in the 58th minute. Nikky Cairney beat two Maryhill defenders before cutting the ball back to Steven Dymock, who blasted the ball high into the net. Four minutes later the visitors increased their lead when Mark Hailstones, despite appearing to push John Cunningham, was allowed to continue, and his cross was met by Dymock who headed powerfully into the net. A severe thumping looked on the cards for Maryhill when Darian MacKinnon scored Clydebank's third ten minutes later. A woeful clearance from the Maryhill defence landed at his feet around 25 yards from goal, and his shot swerved at the last minute and flew past Tiropoulos. Maryhill proceeded to make things ever harder for themselves when Scott Banks was sent off for a second bookable offence, but despite that , they hit back, and reduced the deficit twelve minutes from the end. Sub Paul McWhirter, despite the attentions of three Clydebank defenders managed to wriggle clear and push the ball past Gonet and into the net. Although reduced to nine men when Mark Maxwell received his second yellow card, Maryhill amazingly had the opportunity to reduce the deficit further when they were awarded a penalty in injury time after Gonet had fouled Alan Russell inside the penalty area. As it was technically not a clear goalscoring opportunity, referee Nick Walsh's decision to show the Clydebank keeper only a yellow card was probably correct. The keeper guessed correctly as he dived to his right to save Russell's effort from the spot.

In the end, there was little doubt that the better team won. Clydebank always looked sharper and faster, and quite frankly had better players. Despite all of that, with a little luck and composure, Maryhill could have snatched a draw, which would have been an injustice to the visitors. Although seven yellow and two red cards were issued, there was scarcely a really bad tackle to be seen, with the punishments being largely for petty fouling, and over zealous expression of opinions on the ref's performance.
