Maryhill  v. Blantyre Vics
0 - 0

8th May 2010

Despite dominating for long spells, Maryhill were unable to earn the three points vital to their survival in the First Division.

The now customary upbeat start to the game unfolded straight from the kick off, and within the first minute Vics' keeper Colin Robertson had to make a great save from a powerful Mark Sideserf shot. The visitors hit back immediately and Paul Mallon shot past after being put in a good position by James Cochrane. It was mostly all Maryhill, however, and efforts from Mark Sideserf and Scott Banks came close, before Chris Calder made a good block with his feet from a close range Mallon shot. Ten minutes from the interval Ryan Scobie had a goal bound shot blocked on the line, and a few minutes later  good work between Scobie and Sideserf ended with the latter shooting just inches wide. The visitors were by no means out of it, and Chris Calder again had to look lively to push away a strong drive from Craig Hastings.

Half Time -  Maryhill  0   Blantyre  0

Five minutes into the second period, a 20 yard shot from Ross Barr whistled past the Vics' goal with Robertson beaten. Blantyre replied with a great solo run from Craig Moore, which ended in disappointment when his shot was wide of the target. Maryhill piled on the pressure, but despite long spells on top, continually lost their way inside the Blantyre penalty area where their defence, well marshalled by Neil Newman, coped comfortably with all of Maryhill's efforts. Robertson made vital saves in quick succession from Sideserf,  Scobie and a Scott Banks header. The closest  Maryhill got to a goal was when Mark Maxwell beat Robertson to a through ball , but his lob towards the empty goal was not strong enough and was scrambled off the line by Newman. Despite being pinned back for long spells, Vics proved dangerous on the break when a long range shot from sub Colin McNeil struck the post , then an 18 yard shot on the turn from Paul Mallon skimmed the crossbar. Andy Dorrans of Blantyre was sent off eight minutes from the end when he was shown a second yellow card by ref Graham McNeillie for abruptly terminating a promising run by Maryhill sub Leyton Slack. Hill's final try came in injury time when a well struck free kick from Mark Sideserf was just inches too high.

Although they had by far the bulk of the play, Maryhill repeatedly ran out of creative ideas near goal, and in the end a draw was probably a fair result.
