Lesmahagow  v. Maryhill
5 - 1

10th May 2010

Although Maryhill are, almost unbelievably, not technically relegated yet, it would take a supreme optimist to predict survival after yet another spiritless and shambolic display.

A couple of early efforts from Ryan Scobie and Craig Ferguson, and some good touches from Mark Sideserf gave cause for hope, but this quickly faded. The home side could have gone ahead in the third minute, but Chris Calder was alert enough to block John Logan's shot. Despite some sterling work by Martin McGoldrick in keeping the lively Logan in check, the Gow striker put his side ahead after eight minutes with the first of several Gow goals which would not have been out of place at a comedy festival. A harmless looking long ball seem to be well covered by Chris Calder, but he dropped it and Logan eventually managed to bundle it over the line after a good old fashioned stramash in the six yard box. Calder redeemed himself for this lapse six minutes later when he made a fine save from Scott Brennan. Maryhill had a good claim for a penalty on the half hour mark when Stewart McLaren appeared to push Ryan Scobie inside the penalty area, but the combination of the incident occurring on the referee's blind side and the absence of an assistant referee, resulted in the offence going unpunished. Lesmahagow continued to be the better side, with Maryhill looking jaded and disjointed, and Calder again made a good save from a shot on the turn by Logan. Any vain hopes of a Maryhill comeback vanished just before half time when Ross Barr was sent off for a rash challenge on Sullivan, then Lee Black scored Lesmahagow's second following further goalmouth capers.

Half Time -  Lesmahagow 2   Maryhill  0

The game was over as a contest within four minutes of the restart as ten man Maryhill were hit by a double blow. First Logan scored the goal of the game, cutting in from the right and curling a superb shot past Calder. This was quickly followed by  another farcical goal as Calder, in attempting to clear blasted the ball off Lee Black and into the net. The Lesmahagow player knew little about it and seemed somewhat bemused  to discover that he had scored his second goal of the game. A massacre looked on the cards at this stage, but the Maryhill defence managed to regain
some composure and conceded only one more goal. Again, it was a totally ridiculous affair as Nicky Sullivan's  innocuous free kick midway through the half  trundled into the net with the entire Maryhill defence seemingly frozen to the spot. Maryhill managed to salvage some dignity in the final fifteen minutes with sub Leyton Slack and Craig Ferguson orchestrating some neat moves. Ten minutes from the end Slack's cross found Mark Maxwell unmarked inside the box. His low shot beat keeper Stewart Thomson and struck the post, but Ryan Scobie was on hand to fire home the rebound to conclude the scoring. Referee Derek Crothers, in an apparent act of mercy did not add even one second of injury time as Lesmahagow finished worthy winners by 5 - 1,  by far Maryhill's biggest defeat of the season. A total embarrassment is the only possible description for this Maryhill performance.
