Maryhill  v. Dunipace
3- 1

13th March 2010

It has been a long time coming, but Maryhill finally managed their first league victory of the season with a convincing win over Dunipace.

Martin McGoldrick and Craig Ferguson were surprisingly left on the bench as Maryhill proceeded to dominate the opening minutes, forcing a series of corners. The visitors were first to create a clear scoring chance, however, when Kevin Montgomery made a good save from a Steven Oates header. Maryhill continued to hold the upper hand, and a double save by Dunipace keeper Blair Hutton prevented first Scott Banks then Ryan Scobie  from opening the scoring. Scobie passed up another good opportunity, heading over from close range, before Scott Banks put Maryhill ahead nine minutes from the interval. Hutton misjudged a free kick from Andy Wright and dropped the ball, leaving the Hill midfielder with  an easy chance to score his first goal for the club. Although Maryhill remained on top until the break, they were unable to increase their lead.

Half  Time  -  MARYHILL  1   DUNIPACE  0

Right at the start of the second half  a "stramash" in the visitors' six yard box almost produced a second goal for Maryhill, but Hutton again made a good stop to avert the danger. It was soon to be Kevin Montgomery's chance to give an example of good goalkeeping when he made vital saves from efforts by Sean McCafferty and sub Kieran McIlduff. Apart from these two chances, it was Maryhill who held the territorial advantage  most of the time, and they went 2 - 0 up midway through the half. Mark Sideserf crossed from the right and Ryan Scobie flicked the ball on to Craig Ferguson who shot home. It was the big midfielder's first touch of the ball , having replaced the trialist striker only a minute previously. Maryhill should have sealed the game, but a series of missed opportunities and inspired goalkeeping from Hutton kept Dunipace in with a chance. Three minutes from the end the visitors were handed a lifeline. There had been no claim from any of their players when sub William McLachlan tumbled in the box after appearing to lose his balance following a challenge from Andy Wright. To the surprise of all present, referee Howard Wilkin decided that the award of a penalty was appropriate, and Ryan McCafferty looked almost embarrassed as he scored from the spot to set up a tense closing three minutes. Peter Fraser missed a great opportunity in the final minute when Craig Ferguson set him up, but he delayed his shot allowing the keeper time to stop his goal attempt. Man of the match Ryan Scobie finally wrapped up a deserved three points for Maryhill in the second minute of injury time, firing home from a tight angle after his first effort had been blocked.
