Maryhill V Cambuslang Rangers
1 -0

14th April 2010

Maryhill's aspirations of remaining in the Central First Division suffered another body blow in the Somervell Park sunshine as the team turned in another disappointing performance.

With Martin mcGoldrick and Craig Ferguson restored to the Maryhill starting lineup, the first clear cut chance of the evening fell to Ryan Scobie in the eighth minute after Mark Sideserf had chested down to him on the edge of the area, but his shot was just wide. Donnelly came close for Cambuslang a minute later as his cross-cum-shot flashed across the Hill goal with no takers. Although there were half chances being created at either end, it was the Lang who opened the scoring in 18 minutes when Dunn flicked in at the far post after a mix-up in the away defence. The remainder of the half was fairly even, with the Hill's best efforts being Leyton Slack's close call after a mazy run and Ross Barr's snap shot which went well over. Kevin Montgomery was forced into two fine saves in the space of a minute around the half hour mark from Dunn and then Donnelly.

The start of the second half was more of the same with the Hill huffing and puffing, but despite all the effort, never really looking like scoring, with Scobie in a good position in 48 minutes failing to control the ball sufficiently to get a shot off and Mark Sideserf shooting high and wide from just outside the area a few minutes later. The Lang had their share of chances as well, with Mark Maxwell clearing off the line from a corner, and danger man Dunn causing the Hill defence problems. The Hill's best chance of the game fell to Ryan Scobie on the 70 minute mark, but again he was unable to control the ball when Craig Ferguson set him up unmarked in the area. The Hill saw two penalty claims dismissed in the last quarter of the game, one being deemed to have been outside the area and the other which saw Sideserf's feet whipped away from him ignored completely.

The Hill could argue their efforts over the 90 minutes deserved a point, but on the night
it really was a case of all perspiration and no inspiration - after the early goal we never truly looked like equalising unless it was from the spot.
