1 - 2
17th April 2010
Thorniewood
completed the
double over
Maryhill in a
hard fought,
scrappy
encounter at
Lochburn Park on
Saturday.
Both sides failed to come to terms with the swirling wind and a hard bumpy pitch made the art of playing football virtually impossible. With the ball in the air more than on the ground it was the home side who thought they had taken the lead in 22 minutes when John Cunningham looped a header over 'Wood' keeper Martin Fusari then looked on in frustration as Ryan Scobie bundled the net bound ball in on the goal line giving the referee no option but to award an offside decision.
To rub salt into the wound Thorniewood took the lead in 31 minutes when a superbly struck Chris Lafferty free kick from half way found the head of Ryan Miller who from 6 yards guided over Kevin Montgomery and into the net.
Maryhill equalised in the final minute of the half when a cross from the right was blasted home from by Craig Ferguson.
ht 1-1
Maryhill made a sprightly start to the second period and some excellent handling by Fusari was required in 51 minutes to thwart the home side's advances. Luck was with Thorniewood in 54 minutes when a superb 30 yard effort from Scobie that looked in all the way came back off the inside of the post before being cleared.
On the hour mark good play between Martin Devlin and Des Bradshaw set up a chance for Stephen Mullen but the striker fired tamely into Montgomery's arms from 20 yards when more might have been expected.
Thorniewood regained the lead in 71 minutes when a superb piece of play from Phil Hughes resulted in him being upended 25 yards out allowing Brian Wharton to step up and fire a well struck past a bemused Montgomery to claim all three points and open the relegation trapdoor a bit wider for Maryhill.
