At long
last it's over. One of the most
tortuous seasons ever endured by
Maryhill supporters finally came to
an end with yet another defeat and
relegation. This time it was at the
hands of Lesmahagow, whose fate in
being consigned to Division Two
had also been sealed before the
start of this game.
Despite the fact that it was
a "nothing at stake" match, it was
far from being the worst game seen
at Lochburn this season. Both teams
competed keenly right from the start
and Maryhill, with three trialists
in their starting line up, played
with a purpose lacking at other
times during the season. Trialist 11
beat two defenders, then shot past ,
while trialist 3 impressed with a
good work rate and positional sense.
They took a deserved lead after 23
minutes when John Cunningham headed
home from a Mark Sideserf corner,
but the lead only lasted 8 minutes
when Scott Brennan raced past two
Hill defenders and shot home from a
tight angle to make it 1 - 1. It was
entertaining end to end stuff at
this stage, with Maryhill regaining
their lead 10 minutes from half
time. Ryan Scobie flicked on a Craig
Ferguson free kick to Trialist 10
who fired a strong shot past Stewart
Thomson in the visitors' goal. Three
minutes later, Craig Ferguson should
have made it 3 - 1, but from only a
few yards out blasted the ball over
the bar. Another good chance was
missed when trialist 10, with plenty
of time and space, headed weakly at
the keeper. Right on half time a
speculative long range shot from
Nicky Sullivan was fumbled by Kevin
Montgomery in the Maryhill goal, and
the ball ended up in the net.
So,instead of being two or three
goals ahead, Maryhill found
themselves only on equal terms at
the break.
Half
time - Maryhill 2 Lesmahagow 2
The second half was a pretty
even affair, with the visitors
imposing themselves more on the
game. Good opportunities were
squandered at both ends. Maryhill's
Trialist 3 had a good shot well
saved by Thomson, then a Brennan
shot for the visitors struck the
post. For Maryhill trialist
11 finished poorly after being put
in a good position by Craig
Ferguson, then shot wildly over when
through on goal. Goal keeper Thomson
produced a series of good stops,
most notably from efforts by Mark
Sideserf and sub Leyton Slack.
For Lesmahagow a couple of attempts
by Barry Murdoch came close, one
being blocked at the vital moment,
and another skidding just wide of
the goal. Despite several close
calls at both ends, the only other
goal arrived 18 minutes from the end
when Sullivan finished off a good
run down the left by shooting past
Kevin Montgomery for what proved to
be the winner.
