John Hinshelwood's Match Report

St Anthony's V Maryhill
2 - 0

20th March 2010

Football reporters have been known to describe a match as "the game that had everything". Well, this was the game that had nothing. It was almost totally devoid of skill, incident or excitement. 20 guys ran around fairly aimlessly, and two goalkeepers had so little to do that they could easily have read a book or two to pass the time, or gone home early for their tea.

The home team opened the scoring in the 18th minute when Gary McGrath took advantage of indecision in the Maryhill defence to shoot home from close range. Ten minutes later Greg Harvey almost made it 2 - 0, but his headed effort struck the crossbar. Maryhill rarely posed any threat, apart from an inviting cross from Mark Sideserf which eluded the home defence, but there were no Hill players on hand to take advantage of the situation.

Half  Time -  St Anthony's  1   Maryhill  0

Three minutes into the second half St Anthony's were awarded a penalty when Scott Banks handled. Gary Madden scored from the spot, and that was about it. Another 42 minutes of tedium ensued, and most of the spectators slowly lost interest as both sides struggled in vain to find any fluency to their play. It was a nice sunny day, and some new friendships flourished as complete strangers discussed the weather, the economy, the price of mince, or anything really to stave off the increasing boredom. The home side probably deserved the three points by virtue of the fact that they managed to score twice and  were less inept than Maryhill. The only real winners though, were those who stayed away,as this was a truly dire spectacle.
