Larkhall V Maryhill
1 - 3

28th April 2010

A much improved performance saw Maryhill earn three vital points against fellow relegation candidates Larkhall.

Straight from the kick off there was a much more purposeful look about Maryhill with Mark Sideserf and Craig Ferguson in particular, in good form. Apart from a couple of brief flurries of early activity from the home side, Hill dominated, playing some good football, and prompting one bemused  local to enquire how Maryhill could be bottom of the league. A Mark Maxwell corner had the Larkhall defence in turmoil, but there was no Hill player on hand to take advantage. The experienced Kevin Budinauckas in the home goal made a couple of fine stops from a Craig Ferguson shot and a Mark Sideserf header. Ten minutes from half time, the home side's first effort of note came when David Carr cut in from the right and fired in a curling shot which was pushed away by Chris Calder. Five minutes later a great run by Sideserf ended with his shot bringing out another good save from Budinauckas. Just as it was looking like Maryhill's pressure was to go unrewarded, the breakthrough eventually came just before the break. A strong run into the box by Craig Ferguson set up Ryan Scobie whose cross from the by-line was driven home by Mark Maxwell.

Half Time  -  Larkhall 0   Maryhill 1

Larkhall looked more lively at the start of the second period and were unlucky when a header from Alan Watson struck the post. They did have better luck on the hour when Steve Clarke headed home from a David Menelaws corner to make it 1 - 1. Strangely, this goal did not appear to galvanise the home side, and Maryhill gradually regained the upper hand. They scorned two good opportunities to go ahead when Scott Banks mistimed a header from six yards, then Ross Barr shot wildly past after being put in a good position by Ryan Scobie. Two goals in two minutes, however, finally sealed the victory for Maryhill. First a Craig Ferguson cross from the left was blasted home by Mark Maxwell, then Mark Sideserf capped a fine performance with a powerful shot from a Ferguson pass.

This was a deserved win for Maryhill, and as well as a much needed three points, provided the psychological boost of lifting them off the bottom of the league for the first time.
